Seventh pole

Rand Racing qualified first and second in the SRPII class for Thursday's Rolex Sports Car Series race at Daytona International Speedway in Daytona Beach, Fla. Terry Borcheller of Phoenix took the class pole position in the No. 8 Nissan Lola with a time of one minute 47.879 seconds on the 3.56-mile infield road course. Anthony Lazzaro of Acworth, Ga., qualified the No. 7 Lola second on the SRPII grid (1:48.269).

Borcheller scored the team's seventh pole position in as many races. He and Lazzaro usually drive together, but this week Borcheller will drive with Niclas Jönsson of Aliso Viejo, Calif., and Lazzaro will share duty with Jerry Nadeau of Mooresville, N.C.

"I was as nervous as a little girl because this guy [Lazzaro] is my mentor and I wanted to beat him," Borcheller said. "He's my mentor and he has been since I was small, growing up in go-karts. I've always admired him and still do, so it was a big deal. I'm happy for Rand Racing, we got one-two again and the team is gelling great."

Lazzaro was disappointed in his qualifying run, but is looking forward to the race. "I had understeer in the slow-speed stuff and oversteer in the bus stop [chicane]," he said. "That's why I messed up on my quick lap. It was good to go against Terry for once. We've always driven together, but I think it will be fun getting to race against each other."

Winning genes

Rand Racing engineer Jeff Braun has scored five consecutive victories in a few weeks. In addition to the team's class win at Watkins Glen International on June 23, he engineered winning karts for his son Colin, who won four national junior karting championships in the past three weeks. Braun's younger son Travis provided data services.
