DAYTONA COULD REVEAL BREAKTHROUGH PERFORMANCE FOR NEW CENTURY MORTGAGE TEAM
INDIANAPOLIS (June 28, 2005) -- When New Century Mortgage Chip Ganassi Racing with Felix Sabates' no.02 Lexus-Riley crossed the stripe fifth in Round 6 of the Rolex Sports Car Series at Watkins Glen last month, co-drivers Stefan Johansson and Cort Wagner were disappointed with the showing because they knew they had the car to beat in the late stages of the six-hour enduro.
In its debut season for Chip Ganassi Racing, the no.02 New Century Mortgage Lexus-Riley has been impressive with experienced wheelmen Wagner and Johansson at the helm, scoring three top-fives and finishing outside of the top-10 only once in six events. Sporting the colors of money in their green and gold 500hp Lexus-powered Daytona Prototype, the duo knows that getting a win under their belt is just around the next apex.
"We've had great cars all year and I think it really shows what kind of team we have here at Ganassi," said Wagner. "The results have been good thus far, and I think the most important factor is that we continue to learn and grow as a team each time we put the car on the track. We finished fourth at the Rolex 24 in February, but I think we have the car, the staff and the equipment to move into Victory Lane this weekend if we can just find that final piece of the puzzle."
Johansson, an established pilot with countless green flags under his belt spanning Formula One, CART and numerous sports cars series, revisits the site of his Daytona Prototype debut Thursday night at the Brumos Porsche 250 as his team looks to better the season-best second-place showing they recorded at Mont-Tremblant a month ago.
"Daytona is different than most of the courses we compete on in that you go from an infield road course and transition to a steep 31 degrees of banking," said Johansson. "Setup plays a big part in getting the car just right to handle both those conditions. This is the first course that we'll have some of our own data to pull from, so we should have good things in store for Thursday night."
Fans of New Century Mortgage Chip Ganassi Racing with Felix Sabates can catch the no.02 New Century Mortgage Lexus-Riley in action at the Brumos Porsche 250 in Daytona Beach, Fla. this Thursday, June 30th (LIVE, SPEED Channel, 8:00 pm ET) at DIS for Round 7 of the Rolex Sports Car Series.
