Bad Luck Strikes Bell Motorsports/Feeds the Need Racing's Kodak EasyShare DORAN JE4 Pontiac No. 54 In Rolex Series Race at Daytona Thursday Night
DAYTONA BEACH, Fla., June 30 - Bad luck spoiled the Bell Motorsports/Feeds the Need Racing team's effort in the Brumos Porsche 250 Rolex series race Thursday night at Daytona International Speedway.
Driving the Kodak EasyShare DORAN JE4 Pontiac No. 54, Terry Borcheller had advanced eight positions in only two laps, but then on lap three he spun between turns two and three in oil dropped from the Horizon Motorsports Pontiac No. 23.
When he stopped he hit a guardrail with the car's right rear, but luckily the Gainesville, Ga.-based driver wasn't hurt.
He was, however, left stranded in a difficult spot, and the car couldn't be towed back to the pits or the paddock easily. The damage from the incident, the loss of so many laps and the huge clean-up that would have been needed caused the team to call it quits for the evening, and co-driver Ralf Kelleners of Dusseldorf, Germany didn't drive.
The team's official finishing position was 25th in the Daytona Prototype class and 51st overall.
The event was broadcast live on SPEED.
Borcheller had started 21st after a rough qualifying session Thursday afternoon. He was penalized for not immediately heeding a full-field black flag during the 15-minute qualifying session, although he said that doing so would have been dangerous due to his position on the track at the time.
He had a fabulous start in the race, however, and over the radio he told the crew that the car was great. He had advanced to 15th place by the end of lap one and he was 13th by the end of lap two before running over the other car's oil.
Corner workers reported that a total of three cars went off course due to the dropped oil.
Things had started off well enough on Thursday. When both the practice session times were combined the team was 11th in practice with a fastest lap of 1:47.478 (119.243 mph). If that would have been a qualifying time it would have put the car ninth on the starting grid, sandwiched between two other DORAN JE4s.
The team hopes for better luck at the next race July 29-31 at Barber Motorsports Park in Birmingham, Ala.
