The New Century Mortgage and Monster Cable-backed Porsche 911 GT3 RS of The Racer's Group will start tomorrow's Grand-Am Weekend of Champions race from the back of the grid tomorrow, after an obscure technical infraction caused the car to be barred from qualifying. In Grand-Am qualifying, a rule states that teams may not change tires in pit lane after the green flag has dropped signaling the start of the qualifying session; the team drove the #66 car to pit lane, mounted their marked qualifying tires, and were consequently barred from running the session. However, the team's fast lap in practice this morning was 1:54.06, two-tenths of a second faster than the eventual pole-winning time of 1:54.29 set by the Rennwerks Porsche team.

Team owner Kevin Buckler explained the rule. "Technically, the rule says that you cannot put your qualifying tires on your car in pit lane while the track is hot. I and my team have never heard of this rule, and I have to question why it exists, but a rule is a rule, so we'll start from the back of the pack. I'll put the bit between my teeth and drive even harder from the back of the pack to get to the front. Other than this minor setback, it's been a great weekend. Our car is totally ready for the race tomorrow, and it's going to be very fast."

The Grand-Am Weekend of Champions Rolex Series race will be live televised tomorrow, November 1st, at 1pm EST on Speed Channel.
