SunTrust Team Starts from 27th Position After Friday's Qualifying Allows Team to Recover Lost Time

Daytona Beach, Florida (January 27, 2006) -- The SunTrust race team will start the 44th annual Rolex 24 At Daytona from the 27th position following the weekend's second and final qualifying session. Friday's efforts at Daytona International Speedway enabled the No. 10 SunTrust Pontiac Riley to start in the 27th position after a penalized qualifying run on Thursday placed the defending Rolex 24 At Daytona champions at the back of the pack.

Max "The Ax" Angelelli's solid Friday qualifying effort enabled the SunTrust team to recover ground lost due to the penalty. In that session Angelelli's fastest time was a 1:45.702 at 121.247 mph.

Angelelli qualified on the front row in the second position Thursday, but unfortunately, the 2005 Daytona Prototype championship winning team was assessed a technical infraction following a post-qualifying technical inspection.

In addition to the No. 10 team, three other Daytona Prototypes received penalties. The SunTrust car was the only Daytona Prototype participating in Friday's qualifying and easily qualified in the number one spot against the GT class cars. Angelelli clocked a time of 1:45.702 at 121.247 mph, enabling the SunTrust team to claim the 27th-starting position, after the first 26 positions were set in Thursday's qualifying.

"Because of the circumstances, we checked the car and just tried to run fast," explained Angelelli. "We treated it more like a warm up [than a qualifying event]. It was very relaxed."

"We were the only Daytona Prototype out there, so we treated it like a practice session," said Bill Riley, owner of Riley Technologies, who spearheads the No. 10 SunTrust Pontiac Riley team effort. "We made some changes to the car and made some gains, so we're pretty happy about it."

Following qualifying, Friday's track schedule continued with the final Rolex Series practice of the weekend. Ten minutes into the session the No. 10 SunTrust car recorded the fastest lap of the session, a 1:45.846, but when the practice concluded that time would hold as only the fourth fastest.

The 44th annual running of the twice-around-the-clock endurance race will start at noon this Saturday. The Speed Channel broadcast will include 13 hours as follows: Saturday, January 28th from 12:00 noon - 6:00 p.m. and 8:00 p.m. - 11:00 p.m., and Sunday, January 29 from 8:00 a.m. - 12:00 noon.

Session Information:

Friday Practice Session #1: The SunTrust Pontiac Riley team used the morning warm-up as an installation lap after a scheduled engine change and didn't post any significant time.

Friday Qualifying Session #1: Angelelli recorded the fastest time of Friday's qualifying event, with a time of 1:45.702 at 121.247 mph.
