Aussies Lead Germans and Nonnamakers in GT as Porsche Cup Cars Hold Top 13 Positions at Nine Hour Mark; Brumos DPs in Top 15
DAYTONA BEACH, FL - February 5 - The three leading GT teams at the Rolex 24 Hours at Daytona are all from different countries, but they have three things in common after nine hours at the Daytona International Speedway.
All three teams are on the same lap; they have all run perfect races more than a third of the way through this twice-around-the-clock classic; and they are all racing Porsche 911 GT3 Cup race cars.
The all-Australian team, in the #00 Auto Gallery TRG Porsche of Craig Baird/Marcus Ambrose/Paul Morris/John Teulan, known as the Aussie Assault team, holds a six-second lead over the #71 German-based Farnbacher Racing USA Porsche 911 GT3 Cup car of Wolf Henzler/Dominik Henzler/Shawn Price/Pierre Ehret, with the teams seeming to swap positions depending on who has a better pit stop. The leading GT Porsches are stopping for fuel every 37 laps (or approximately one hour and 14 minutes) if there are no yellow flags.
Third is the Massillon, Ohio-based #41 Orison Planet Earth Motorsports Porsche 911 GT3 Cup car of , Wayne Nonnamaker/James Jakes/Joe Nonnamaker/Will Nonnamaker/Victor Gonzales, the team that is the defending Grand-Am Cup champions. Fourth is the #36 TPC Racing Porsche 911 GT3 Cup car of Michael Levitas/Randy Pobst/John Littlechild/Spencer Pompelly/Jean-Francois Dumoulin, which held the lead until they lost time with a solo spin.
Fifth, after starting at the back of the pack due to mechanical problems in qualifying, is the Austrian-based #51 Red Bull Porsche of KarlWendlinger/ Dieter Quester/Johnny Mowlem/Vincent Vosse, only one lap down from the GT leader.
In the Daytona Prototype class, both the #58 Red Bull Brumos Porsche Fabcar (David Donohue/Darren Law/Sascha Maassen/Lucas Luhr) and the #59 Brumos Porsche Fabcar (Hurley Haywood/J.C. France/Timo Bernhard/Romain Dumas/Mike Rockenfeller) continue to keep their rhythm, with #58 currently in ninth place, only one lap behind the leaders, and the #59 car in 15th place.
