DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. -- February 2 -- With a good qualifying position and high hopes for a top finish, the #38 Champion Racing Lola Porsche broke a spark plug on the pace lap, and fell 11 laps behind before it even entered the race.
Then, about an hour later, while starting driver Andy Wallace was navigating the infield road course, the shifter broke on the car, leaving the Champion Porsche crew very frustrated. The car was towed in and repaired, and is running again at the three hou r mark, although it is many laps behind.
In the GT category, the Porsche 911 GT3 RS contingent overtook the pole-sitting Mosler in the first 30 minutes, with the #57 Seikel Motorsport Porsche of Plumb/Collin/Burgess/Shep leading for most of the second and third hour. Second is the #43 Orbit Raci ng Porsche 911 GT3 RS of Kyle Petty/Peter Baron/Leo Hindery/Mike Borkowski, with The Racers Group Porsche 911 GT3 RS of Jorg Bergmeister, Timo Bernhard, Michael Schrom and Kevin Buckler in third.
In GTS, the Gentilozzi Jaguar is first, but the #00 Empringham/Spenard/Bytzek Porsche GT1 is second. The #7 Red Bull Porsche 911 GT3 R of Said/Quester/Voss/Ricitelli was third until a 15-minute garage stop for cooling problems put them well back in the pack.
