Michael Shank Racing quickest in final practice for Rolex 24
Daytona Beach, FL (4 February 05)-- The Michael Shank Racing Pontiac-Riley scored the fastest lap in the final practice session for the 43rd running of the Rolex 24 at Daytona with a time of 1:48.205 seconds on the 3.65-mile road course at Daytona International Raceway.
The Mears Motor Coach-liveried car will start from the twelfth position on Saturday, and the quick run in practice shows that the hard work the MSR crew has put into preparing for the twice-around-the-clock classic has the team well-placed for a good run this weekend.
"It's a good boost for our confidence heading into the race, and we feel like we have the car where we need it to be set-up wise," said award-winning team owner Mike Shank. "While obviously practice times don't matter that much, we were a bit disappointed with where we qualified yesterday, so this is a good sign for us looking toward the race, and knowing we have a good car under us is a good way to get into race mode."
All four drivers -Mike Borkowski, Paul Mears, Larry Connor, and Duncan Dayton got a run in the car during the session as the team also used the session to work on driver changes, as Borkowski set the quickest time during the session.
"Its great to take the top time with the competition level being so incredibly high for this race," said Borkowski. "I was just trying to get a read on the car, and the balance is pretty good, so I think we have got the car where we want it to be heading into tomorrows race. It's also good that we were able to run a pace that was pretty close to our qualifying time from yesterday, but today we did it with full tanks and hard tires, so it feels like we've moved the car to where we need it to be."
The 14-race Rolex Sports Car Series season will get underway with the 43rd running of the Rolex 24 at Daytona on February 5-6, with the race slated to start at noon on Saturday, February 5th.
Speed Channel will carry live coverage of the race beginning on Saturday at noon until 11pm, and will resume at 8 am on Sunday.
