Max Papis and Krohn Racing/TRG Teammates Complete Eventful Rolex 24 at Daytona
DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. (February 7, 2005)- Max Papis and his teammates in the #66 Krohn Racing/ TRG / Pontiac Riley completed the grueling 24 hour race after major mechanical breakdowns slowed them down to a 16th place finish.
After starting the race in 3rd position and managing to remain in the top 5 throughout most of the 24 hours, the #66 Krohn Racing/ TRG / Pontiac Riley ran into trouble when at 13h21m the half shaft broke, bringing the car behind the wall for more than two hours while the crew replaced it. When the # 66 finally managed to go back on track at 15h24m, they had gone from 5th to 14th in the race.
By hour 18, Papis had managed to get the car back to 10th in the race, but when he got back in the car at 20h40m for his final driving stint, fate dealt a second blow; he had barely driven one hour before he had to take the car back to the garage to replace the driveshaft and upright. After so much time behind the wall, a 16th place overall was a great accomplishment to a team that showed strength in teamwork throughout the night.
"Today was a great learning curve for everyone. I'm really proud of the job that the crew did. It's definitely proof of our integrity and our will to succeed. We led a few laps and ran most of the time in the top three, four until we had the driveshaft problems. But I think finishing a 24-hour is an accomplishment and we'll take it from there," said Papis.
