MOWLEM, SAMAX CREW TAKE SEVENTH IN ROLEX 24
DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. (Jan. 29, 2006) - British racing star Johnny Mowlem and his SAMAX Motorsports teammates survived the challenging rigors of competing in the Rolex 24 at Daytona and finished seventh in the Rolex Sports Car Series GT class.
The 66-car field was full of some of the biggest names in the racing world and the top-10 finish in class was a notable achievement. But Mowlem, a former winner of the event, was left wondering what might have been.
"We replaced a radiator and worked through some power steering problems and I'm really proud of the effort everyone on the SAMAX team made," Mowlem said. "But, that said, once you've won the Rolex 24, anything other than winning a Rolex watch is unacceptable."
Driving a Porsche 911 GT3 Cup car, Mowlem recorded the third-fastest lap in the GT class during the night. All of the drivers drove double stints throughout the race, with Mowlem doing a total of 4 double stints to drive a lot of the night.
"The SAMAX team really came through as the race progressed. I was very impressed with the speed with which they changed the damaged radiator and nose, and also the rear brake pads," Mowlem noted. "They certainly deserved to get to the finish, it's just a shame that it wasn't a podium so we could have given team owner Peter Baron and his crew, some well earned champagne!!"
The team finished 18th in the overall scoring, finishing 663 laps around the 3.56-mile, 14-turn road course for a total of 2,360 miles.
One of Britain's most successful and personable sports car drivers, Mowlem started his career behind the wheel at age 19. In 2004, he finished fourth in the British Racing Drivers Club Gold Star Award, a ranking of all British racers competing in international series, including Formula One. A married father of two, Mowlem was raised in Majorca, Spain. He has earned university degrees in economics and Spanish. More information on Mowlem is available at www.johnnymowlem.com.
