No.01 CompUSA Chip Ganassi Racing Returns to Defend 2004 Rolex Championship
Daytona Beach, FL, January 8, 2005-- After capturing the 2004 Rolex Series Championship in their inaugural Grand American Sports Car season, CompUSA Chip Ganassi Racing with Felix Sabates returns for the 2005 season to defend its title with Daytona Prototype Champion driver Scott Pruett. His new driving partner this year will be Mexican Luis Diaz, teammate and driver of last season's no.02 CompUSA Lexus Riley.
"I believe that the combination of Scott Pruett and Luis Diaz is going to be a very good pairing and will make the no.01 CompUSA car a tough team to beat," said team owner Chip Ganassi. "I think it was a real feather in the cap for CompUSA to have a championship in their first season in racing. We're all really looking forward to the start of the 2005 season and we intend to defend our championship vigorously starting with the Rolex 24 At Daytona."
The 2004 Rolex Champion Scott Pruett returns to the helm of the no.01 CompUSA Lexus-Riley with plenty of motivation to defend his title while hoping to add a few more wins to the team's list of successes.
"It's really something to start the season and get ready for the Rolex 24 At Daytona as the defending champion,' says Pruett who won 11 of 12 poles and four races on route to the team's first Grand Am Series Championship. "As competitive as this series was last year, it's going to be even stronger this season, and once that green flag drops for the Rolex 24 At Daytona, it's anyone's game and titles mean nothing. If you look at the all-star line up for this year's race, it reads like a "who's who" of racing with champs from past years and all different types of racing. It's going to be an incredible race and certainly a very exciting season. Chip Ganassi has put together a stellar program and we'll continue to build on that every day in order to defend our title as champs."
This will be Diaz's first participation in the Rolex 24 At Daytona race after joining the CompUSA team last season with the addition of a second car for the second race of the 2004 season, and he expects the experience gained last year will serve him well.
"I am thrilled and so motivated heading into this season and this race," said the Mexican driver. "I learned so much in my first season and I really feel that I can improve on that even more this year especially working and sharing driving duties with Scott Pruett. I take great pride in the confidence Chip Ganassi and CompUSA have shown in me and I'd love to be able to contribute directly in repeating the team's championship again this season. What makes this season even more motivating is the fact the Rolex series will be making its debut in my native Mexico. I can't tell you how much I am looking forward to that. I love to go there with the no.01 CompUSA Lexus Riley fighting atop the standings for the 2005 Rolex championship."
As the team prepares for the Rolex 24 At Daytona on February 5-6, Pruett and Diaz be joined by young Australian Ryan Briscoe, a Toyota Racing F1 test driver, who has been invited by Chip Ganassi Racing to make his North American racing debut by taking part in the race as a third driver.
"While I'd like to treat this as I would any other race, I can't because this is a big deal,"said the 23 year old Briscoe took the wheel no.01 CompUSA Daytona Prototype Lexus Riley for the first time during a test in preparation for the Rolex 24 At Daytona February 6-9."It'll be my first race in North America, it's a famous race and I'll be in a very competitive car and that's really something to be excited about. I've been talking to my teammates and the engineers and learning a lot these past few days. It's a great opportunity and I hope to make a good contribution."
