CARPENTIER SHINES IN ROLEX TEST DAYS AT HOMESTEAD
Montréal, QC - December 6, 2006 - Patrick Carpentier had an impressive outing during the two-day Grand-Am Rolex Sports Car Series pre-season test sessions held Tuesday and Wednesday at Homestead-Miami Speedway in Florida. Carpentier, who had previously tested the 3.701-kilometer (2.3-mile), 11-turn Homestead road course during his 2005 Indy Racing League season and also while he was at Champ Car, was happy with the results and with the performance of the SAMAX Motorsport Pontiac Riley.
Following Wednesday morning's third session, Carpentier led all 20 Daytona Prototypes with a best lap time of 1:14.090 (179.853 Km/h-111.756 mph). However, his reign on top of the time charts would not stand to the assaults of the drivers in the final session in which the Mecachrome-backed driver did not take part. Canadian Michael Valiante, who was also quickest on Tuesday, posted the best time of the two-day affair with a lap in 1:13.884 (180.035 Km/h-112.068 mph). Second fastest was Italian driver Max Angelelli (Pontiac Riley) with a time of 1:13.910, followed by the Ford Crawford driven by Jon Fogarty of Redbud, Oregon. SAMAX Motorsport finished fourth overall.
The Canadian driver, now living in Las Vegas, was credited with the second quickest lap on Tuesday with a time of 1:14.162 (179.677 Km/h-111.647 mph). Michael Valiante of Vancouver posted the quickest lap, edging Carpentier by only 11 hundredths of second. Third place after the first day went to Jon Fogarty. The second series-sanctioned pre-season test session drew 35 cars, 20 of which were Daytona Prototypes.
"This is a great team to drive for," said Carpentier who joined the SAMAX Team earlier this fall. "They are very professional in their approach to racing, and they come ready with a well prepared car. The car was great coming out of the trailer. We tested some components, but it did not change much as the car was already well balanced. It's quite a treat compared to my last season in IRL where the package was not competitive."
The final pre-season test will be held at Daytona Beach, Florida January 4 - 6, 2007. The 14-race 2007 season begins January 27 with the 53rd running of the Rolex 24 At Daytona.
The Grand-Am Rolex Sports Car Series will make its first appearance Friday August 3 at Montreal's Circuit Gilles-Villeneuve for a 400-kilometer race. The Montreal race weekend will feature on Saturday the first-ever NASCAR Busch Series race held in Canada.
