SunTrust Racing Qualifies Fourth on the Grid for Barber Race
Birmingham, Alabama (October 9, 2004) - The SunTrust Racing team will start from an unfamiliar spot in Sunday's Porsche 250 presented by Bradley Arant race - the second row. The No. 10 SunTrust Racing Pontiac Riley Mk.11 has started from the first row in each of the last four races but will start from the fourth position on Sunday. This is only the fourth time in eleven races that the black-and-yellow 500 horsepower racer has not started from the front row. In Phoenix, the SunTrust Racing car started from the same spot and went on to collect their first of three victories of the season.
Series point leaders Max Papis and Scott Pruett, in the No. 01 CompUSA Lexus Riley, will start from the pole position. Papis' time was 1:20.613 at 102.713 mph. Taylor clocked a 1:22.063 at 100.898 mph. Currently, the SunTrust Racing No. 10 team trails the No. 01 CompUSA team by a mere five points in the Rolex championship.
Wayne Taylor (starting driver) - "We had a power steering issue before qualifying. The crew changed the rack and got things fixed. It was a bit of a loose car. There just wasn't much left in me to get anymore out of the car in qualifying."
Max Angelelli - "I only did a couple of laps all day and that was this morning. I'm happy about the car. There are no concerns. For me, it has been fine."
Bill Riley, Team Owner - "We've been fast this week and have been working on race set-up. It should be a real comfortable car for swimming lessons tomorrow."
Friday Practice Session #1: The SunTrust Racing team posted the fastest time with a 1:19.332 at 104.372 mph with Max Angelelli at the wheel.
Friday Practice Session #2: Angelelli clocked a 1:20.297 at 103.117 mph, again fastest overall in the session.
Saturday Practice Session #3: The SunTrust Racing team, with Wayne Taylor at the wheel, clocked a time of 1:25.170 at 97.217 mph on a drying race track.
The Porsche 250 presented by Bradley Arant is a 250 mile/109-lap or two-hour and 45-minute time limit race and will be televised live at 1:00 p.m. ET on Speed Channel.
