Labonte and Cosmo Ready to Race in the 09 Pontiac
With continued support from sponsor, MarineMax, Bobby Labonte and Guy Cosmo will be climbing into the Spirit of Daytona 09 Pontiac Crawford to take on the Barber Motorsports Park on July 30th in the 11th race of the Grand American Rolex Series schedule presented by Crown Royal.
The challenging 2.3mile road course with its elevation changes and technical turns will give the 09 drivers a ride to remember. Busy NASCAR champion, Labonte has raced at Barber before, but this will be his first time powering the Pontiac-Crawford on the technical course. Labonte's last stint with Spirit of Daytona was in the Brumos Porsche 250 at the Daytona International Speedway. Labonte and Cosmo won the SunTrust Improve Your Position Award by overtaking 11 competitors during the night race.
Cosmo had a chance to shake down the 09 MarineMax Prototype a few weeks ago at Barber and was happy with its showing. "I am excited to be back in the seat and co-driving with Bobby for this event," said Cosmo. "We have made great progress on the team's consistency and structure. Our test at Barber helped to get a handle on the car and we should have a great performance Sunday afternoon. I am thrilled to have MarineMax back on board for this event. MarineMax is a very loyal and enthusiastic sponsor and it is great to work with them."
The Spirit of Daytona team is looking for a top-10 finish for the Sunday race. Last year the 09 Prototype was running consistently in the front of the pack until a fuel system malfunction took the car out of the race. To prepare for this race, the 09 machine spent a week at Fischer Engineering updating the Pontiac engine to comply with the new Grand Am rules package. The updates and prior test at Barber will help the team finish high on the scoreboard.
With the car setup ready for the on track conditions, both drivers need to prepare for the heat and humidity that the July race will have in store. Cosmo knows the biggest challenge of the race will not be from the track itself, " The track itself is a lot of fun, a neat challenge. But the biggest hurdle will be keeping all the drivers fresh." The Florida resident will be able to handle the humidity and keep his cool as the 09 Crawford circles the Birmingham track.
