Spirit of Daytona Racing Ready for Barber
(Daytona Beach, FL) 16 July 09 -- Spirit of Daytona Racing is headed north to Barber Motorsports Park for round eight of the 2009 Rolex Sports Car Series season. The team will campaign the No. 09 Porsche V8-powered Coyote with drivers Buddy Rice and Antonio Garcia sharing the driving duties. The two champions first teamed with Spirit of Daytona for the Brumos Porsche 250 at Daytona, where a tire issue ended the day early for the Rolex 24-winning duo.
That incident, which sent Garcia off-track at high speeds in the No. 90 Boy Scouts of America-liveried Coyote, was a setback for the team as it caused significant damage to the newest-specification Coyote. The new machine is undergoing repairs, and Spirit of Daytona Racing has elected to load the venerable No. 09 Coyote to contest the 2 hour and 45-minute Porsche 250 presented by Legacy Credit Union on Sunday.
While the developments mean that the team is using a different playbook than planned, at least it's a book with some good notes, as the No. 09 qualified fifth and ran very strongly in the 2008 Rolex event at Barber, something that the team will look to do once again come Sunday.
"The crash obviously set things back, but that's not going to keep us from going out there and trying to do as well as we can this weekend with the old car," said team owner Troy Flis. "We were strong here last year and even though we were hoping of course to get some more development time with the new Coyote this weekend, we're just going to concentrate on getting as much as we can out of what we have.
"It's disappointing, but when you are the only team pushing the development of a car that has as much potential as we feel this Coyote does, that just comes with the territory. This will still be a great chance for us to keep developing our engineering relationship with Buddy and Antonio. The guys have worked really hard to have this car ready to go, so who knows what kind of rabbit we might be able to pull out of our hat!"
The race weekend will kick off on Friday, with the Porsche 250 slated to be carried LIVE on SPEED starting at 3:00 PM EST.
