Richmond, Va. (May 19, 2003) - In only the team's tenth professional racing start, Marcus Motorsports put its No. 69 BMW M3 into the GT-class winner's circle in Sunday's Rolex Sports Car Series Barber 250 at The Park at Barber Motorsports Park in Birmingham, Ala.
The BMW M3 completed 95 laps around the 2.3-mile road course in securing the GT victory and finishing fifth overall, including setting the fastest GT race lap (Brian Cunningham, 1:30.210) on lap 63. Starting from a season's best second starting position (Brian Cunningham, 1:28.038) Brian Cunningham jumped into the class lead on the opening lap and ran as high as second overall before handing the No. 69 to Hugh Plumb on lap 64.
"We knew we could not make it on only one fuel stop so at an early yellow we brought Brian in for fuel and, because he was driving so hard, a rear tire change," said a delighted team owner, Stephen Marcus. "Hugh got in on lap 64 and locked up our first win. Our test at Summit Point really was instrumental in getting us this win. The time we spent getting a new rear sway bar dialed in made the M3 handle even better and the help from Gordon Friedman at Autometics in solving our fuel cell issues of previous races enabled us to use every drop of gas. Everyone associated with Marcus Motorsports can be proud of this win."
"Although the rain had stopped before the race the track remained damp in many places," said Cunningham. "We planned to drive to the conditions and once we set a rhythm that did not overdrive the track the speed came. The M3 was exceptionally well prepared for this race and the three years I spent racing in England prepared me for the uncertain conditions of the day. The team was in the zone. From the first lap of practice to the checkered flag this was a winning effort."
"The first win is always the sweetest," said Plumb. "Although a young team, Marcus Motorsports is committed to win races and proved it at Barber. Brian gave me the car in great position making the run to the checkered flag an easy one."
Sponsored by In Style Limousine, BBS Wheels, Communication Construction Group and Market Place Holdings, Marcus Motorsports has all top-10 finishes so far this season with a sixth at the season-opening Rolex 24 at Daytona, a third at the Nextel Grand Prix of Miami and a fifth at the AJ's Fine Foods 250 at Phoenix.
The Barber 250 at The Park is scheduled to be broadcast on Speed Channel on May 24 at 1 p.m. ET.
Marcus Motorsports will be back in action at the California Speedway in Fontana, Calif. on June 6-8 in the Grand American 400.
