Now Can We Make Up 18 Laps?

Normally at this point in the life of The Boss Snowplow No. 4 Howard-Boss Motorsports Pontiac Crawford, nobody but friends, family, drivers, crew and sponsors are paying any attention to your progress in the 2005 Rolex 24 at Daytona. But these are not normal times. Your scribe has just swigged his second sugarfree Red Bull and thousands of Motorsport.com readers will continue this gripping saga.

Seriously, these are the times that separate the real racers from the pretenders. Despite the odds against a high finish, the No. 4 crew healed the injured racecar. Leitzinger's first flying lap out of the garage was a solid 1:50.4 and the No. 4 was soon the quickest car on the racetrack.

During a lengthy caution at around 3:40 a.m., the team decided Leitzinger had been in the car long enough and brought him in. After a 50.874sec service stop, Elliott Forbes-Robinson pulled back onto the track, seventh in Daytona Prototype. The following radio exchange spoke to the unseemly hour of the day:

Spotter: "One to go, Butch."

EFR: "I didn't know Butch was in here."

Spotter: "Oh, give me a break Elliott."

Meanwhile Butch was commenting on how well the repairs had taken where he was once again among the quickest cars on the track. He did comment on the tires: "There seems to be quite a lot of inconsistency between sets of tires. This last stint, the first set was really off, but the second set was as good as we've had. I don't know what the problem is. Maybe quality control."
