Yelloly logs seventh and ninth at GP3 opener

Nick Yelloly finished ninth and seventh in last weekend’s GP3 season-opener at Circuit de Catalunya in Barcelona, Spain.

Yelloly, who drives the No. 26 for Status Grand Prix, had been quickest during the first day of testing at Barcelona last month however while qualifying, he kept getting held up in traffic and had to settle for 11th. Yelloly immediately made an impact at the start of the race and managed to get into the top-eight, but then got caught by traffic and was passed by Matheo Tuscher to finish ninth.

Race two began on a slippery track but the whole field remained on slick tyres. Starting ninth, Yelloly was easily one of the quickest cars out there. He was pushed wide at the restart when Patrick Kujala spun in front of him, but he soon battled back to seventh. Yelloly continued to pressure Jimmy Eriksson for sixth but wasn¹t able to find a way past and remained in seventh when the checkered flag was shown.

The 23-year-old was able to score points both races over the weekend and sits ninth in the championship standings with four points.

"Status GP were easily the quickest on the track for much of the race," said Yelloly. "Kujala hampered my race at the start when he took myself and my team mate wide ­ he out braked himself and turned across me. I had to get past a couple of people and then I caught Eriksson and Marvin Kirchhofer, it was as if they were standing still. I¹m really happy with the pace, it’s just a shame we didn¹t have much to show for it this weekend."

The second round of the GP3 Series will be held at the Red Bull Ring, supporting the F1 Austrian Grand Prix on 20th-22nd June.
