Tough weekend for Jimmy Eriksson at Silverstone

The British round of the 2013 GP3 Series campaign did not mark the step forward in performance that Jimmy Eriksson was looking for, after the qualifying woes that have plagued the Swede in the early parts of the season continued at Silverstone.

The Status Grand Prix man started from 23rd on the grid in Saturday’s Race 1, eventually taking the chequered flag in 18th following a string of overtaking moves.

In the subsequent Race 2 – which was run early on Sunday morning – Eriksson was then forced into retirement, leaving the UK with zero points to his name.

“Quite simply a weekend to forget,” says Jimmy Eriksson. “We were hoping to edge closer to the front-running pace here at Silverstone, but we were too far off in qualifying and we still have a lot of work to do before we are where we believe we should be.

It is very, very difficult to get the most out of new tyres, and we struggle to extract that vital performance over a single flying lap.

We do look better in the races – I managed to make up five positions despite running with a damaged front wing throughout Race 1 – but it’s normally hard to overtake and that makes the outcome of qualifying ultra-important for the end result.

After a weekend like this, all you want to do is to head back out on track as soon as possible – so it’s great that the next race is just around the corner.”
