Ladies and gentlemen welcome to the press conference for today's feature race here in Monza. Joining us today is champion and race winner Esteban Gutierrez, second place man Robert Wickens and third place man Rio Haryanto.
GP3 Series: Esteban starting with you, congratulations that looked like a pretty mad race. How was it from inside the car?
Esteban Gutierrez: Yes it was a crazy race. It was very fun and competitive. I think this was a tough race at the beginning because I knew having everyone behind would be challenging to keep my position, we were conservative at the beginning to look after the tyres. In the end the tyres started to come in and I started to push a lot and made no mistakes and was consistent so we could come back to the position step by step. It felt like a really long race. It was really enjoyable and a fantastic result for the team.
GP3 Series: How do you cope with so much going on, and work out on track your strategy?
Esteban Gutierrez: Well to be honest it's very difficult to have control of everything. There are so many variables: you can receive contact from the back, or easily the front too so it's very important to keep a very intelligent way of doing things.
GP3 Series: Starting P8 tomorrow so you have it all to do again.
Esteban Gutierrez: Well, after today I think it is possible to move forward and overtake the same as today. We will do our best, and this was a great way to celebrate the championship with another win. We accomplished as the plan so the team is very happy with these results and thankfully we had the opportunity to be in this position and gain experience and move forward in my career.
GP3 Series: Robert, how was the race for you?
Robert Wickens: From my side the race was just chaos from the start. I started fifth had a good start and moved into second by the first corner. Then got a good tow and managed to pass Gutierrez early on -- I thought he would pass me right back but I was able to hang on. I tried to hang on to the lead but obviously it didn't work out and from there at one point I dropped down to third and came back to second and back onto the lead. You needed over a second gap on someone before you were safe, because anything smaller and you can tow up to the guy in less than a lap.
GP3 Series: Everyone says that it is impossible to overtake here, but that obviously wasn't a problem today. Why do you think that is?
Robert Wickens: I think because we don't have that much horsepower we don't have the accordion effect that Formula One does. We don't have the crazy acceleration so we you go to full throttle you only loose two cars lengths and can easily make that up. That's probably why our racing was so exciting today.
GP3 Series: You've shown that you can overtake today, can you do the same tomorrow and move up?
Robert Wickens: I started fifth today and finished the first corner in second so all I need is a similar start tomorrow. As long as you are within one second of the car in front all you have to do is hit your apexes and you pass the guy no problem.
GP3 Series: Rio great race, P3, another great race for you. How was your start?
Rio Haryanto: I had a really good start and a really great race. I started tenth and by the first corner I was in seventh. I took over the lead for a couple of laps but I think towards the end my tyres went off and I suffered from under steer.
GP3 Series: You moved up and up and up, and into P1 at one stage and had a fight with Nico and it looked like you guys cut the chicane at one point. What happened?
Rio Haryanto: Yes, Nico was in the middle and Wickens was one the outside. I tried to go on the outside but Nico and I touched and I had to run wide and use the space. I took the lead for a couple of laps but the last few laps Wickens and Gutierrez were much quicker.
GP3 Series: And tomorrow you are starting p6
Rio Haryanto: Yes I think I just have to make a good start and see what happens. It's not a big disaster because you can get such good tow. Hopefully we can fight again like today. Hopefully tomorrow will be a good day for me.
