TOP 10 QUALIFYING FOR JOSEF NEWGARDEN
GP3 racer Josef Newgarden has qualified the #14 Carlin car in seventh position, for the first of two races at Monza this weekend.
The 19 year-old American had no problem learning the Italian circuit, posting the second quickest time in Friday's practice session.
Qualifying on Saturday morning saw Newgarden maintain his previous day's pace, running at the top of the timing sheets on his first set of tyres - in clean air and without the advantage of a tow.
With time for about three laps to go in the session, the young American was finding his rhythm and posted the third quickest time of the day. Dropping down to fifth place as his rivals posted quicker times, Newgarden had just two laps to improve his position and go for the pole. Unfortunately the yellow flags came out as everyone pushed hard in the closing stages, preventing Newgarden from putting together a quick lap.
Nevertheless, the Carlin driver lines up in a respectable seventh place for race one, and will be looking to convert this fourth row start to his first win of the season.
"We have amazing pace around here," said Newgarden, "and I think we'll be strong enough to take a solid result today. A podium would of course be good, but we're going out there for the win."
Speaking about the circuit, Newgarden added: "It's great to drive, I love it. The first two chicanes are fantastic; in fact you can't even talk about this circuit corner by corner. The whole place is fantastic - I can't wait for the races."
Race one gets underway later today at 17:20 local time, with race two scheduled for 09:25 on Sunday morning.
