Starting second, De Vries temporarily dropped back to third but made two overtakes to claim the victory.

Pole-sitter Antonio Fuoco led the field off the line with Alex Albon taking second.

However, Fuoco was only third by the end of Lap 2 Albon and De Vries passed him in the first and second chicanes respectively.

Another ART in Nirei Fukuzumi was running fourth but he was demoted by Jake Dennis on Lap 3 with Charles Leclerc also looking to fight his way through.

Despite Leclerc having the inside position at the second chicane, Fukuzumi kept his foot in on the outside and had the upper-hand on the exit of the corner as a result.

However, Leclerc did not back off as they approached the first Lesmo corner and, with Fukuzumi attempting to close him down, they made contact and retired.

While Jack Aitken behind avoided them, another Arden driver in Tatiana Calderon had her car damaged in the process and was forced to go to the pits.

Following an inevitable safety car phase, de Vries overtook Albon on the restart lap.

The Dutchman slowly but consistently pulled away from his teammate to eventually cross the line by 1.7s.

Albon finished second in a confident manner as he had significant a pace advantage compared to Fuoco in the late stages.

Dennis finished fourth despite coming under pressure from Jack Aitken, the latter attempting to make a move on the penultimate lap but running wide.

Arjun Maini finished sixth from Alex Palou, the Spaniard impressively holding off first Sandy Stuvik and then the Indian for several laps, only to be passed on the last lap.

Trident's Artur Janosz took the final point-scoring position as Ralph Boschung and Jake Hughes, who lost several places at the start, completed the top 10.
