FIRST PODIUM FINISH FOR FELIPE GUIMARÃES AND ADDAX TEAM IN GP3
The second event of the new GP3 Series took place this weekend at the Istanbul Park circuit in Turkey. In the first of the two regulation races, young promise Felipe Guimarães finished 3rd, giving Addax Team their first podium finish in this new event ,this season.
Felipe Guimarães, has been the most consistent of the drivers that make up the Addax Team. He was the best of the three in qualification, finishing with the 7th fastest lap time. All of this despite being very unfamiliar with the circuit. In free practice he was only able to get in three laps due to turbo problems. He made a great start in the first race and quickly climbed up to third place, which he managed to hold on to till the end of the race. This was his first real taste of success at this level and his first time on the winner's rostrum. He did give the Addax Team a fright on the last lap when he had a 360 degree spin, fortunately without any consequence. This result meant he started from sixth position in the second race. In this round he was able to hold on to his position from the start and he was placed in the leading group of drivers. He showed his true worth when he had to hold off the leader of the championship in the closing stages of the race and earn a valuable point. Felipe is showing that he has adapted quickly to this class, particularly when you take into consideration that he has very little prior knowledge of the circuits.
Mirko Bortolotti, qualified in 11th position for the first race. Due to his clutch overheating at the start he was unable to get away well and he found himself in 22nd place, among the back markers. He made a good fightback and was climbing steadily through the field when he made contact with another driver, while fighting for 16th position, which caused him to have a puncture. After an emergency pit stop, he finished the race 25th , despite setting the third fastest lap time and keeping up a good race rhythm. In the second race, starting way back on the grid, he produced a great fightback finishing 12th from his 25th start position. This is even more remarkable considering he was on tyres that were more worn than those of his rivals, after his tyre change in the first race. After his creditable performance here it can only be a question of time before Mirko shows his true potential. Having completed both races, it has given him a valuable opportunity to gain experience and continue making progress at this level.
Pablo Sanchez Lopez, started the first race from a lowly 19th position after the qualifying session. A collision caused by a rival forced him off the track. He was condemned to the back of the field and finally finished 21st. In the second race it was more of the same. The fight among the main pack of drivers usually means a lot of contact between cars and this time was no different and once more he was forced to the back of the group after a collision. It was then that he started to improve on his times and started to climb slowly but surely through the field and finished in a very creditable 16th position.
Felipe Guimarães has moved into the top ten of the overall driver's championship and as a result Addax Team has positioned itself seventh overall in the race for the team title.
The next event on the calendar will take place at the street circuit of Valencia, the last weekend of June and will compete alongside the Europa Formula 1 GP.
