Circuit De Catalunya
One-Two For Barwa Addax Team In Montmelo.
Charles Pic 1st, Giedo Van Der Garde 2nd. Leaders In Both Classifications.
Barwa Addax Team managed to land a magnificent one-two, with Charles Pic winning the race followed home by team mate Giedo van der Garde, in the first GP2 series race which took place today at the Montmelo circuit. Stunning success for the Spanish team, who not only hold on to their lead in the team championship but are also on top in the driver’s championship.
Today’s race winner, Charles Pic, started from third position on the grid. He made a fine start which meant that, despite a safety car due to an accident at the start of the race, he managed to hold on to his third place. After the safety car had retired the first four pulled away from the rest of the field, setting a race rhythm that was too hot for their rivals. However, when the safety car was forced back into action the advantage was wiped out. Once the race got under way again, Charles started bearing down on the second placed driver but with the difficulty of overtaking on this circuit and with the French driver clearly quicker than his rival, the team pulled off a master stroke and changed strategy. Given the increasing degrading and wear of the tyres, most of the drivers opted for changing the four tyres in their compulsory pit stop. The team took a risk and decided to change only the two rear tyres on Pic’s car, saving time and giving him the lead of the race. The main worry was whether the French driver’s tyres could hold out until the end of the race but he was able to control affairs, including the deterioration level of his tyres and he was able to take the car home to his first victory of the season as well as the first with his new team Barwa Addax Team.
Giedo van der Garde, has put in another great performance but has not had all the luck going for him. He got off to a good start and held on to his lead without too many problems. He pushed hard from the beginning and opened up a five second gap on his nearest rival and ten seconds on the fourth placed driver, but lost any advantage when the second safety car came out on track. He came in for his pit stop to change the four tyres, which was in hindsight a conservative decision influenced by his race position. The pit stop was not incident free and problems with right rear tyre meant that he lost a few valuable seconds and consequently the lead of the race to his teammate. It is clear that Giedo was in a very good position to win the race but both drivers had done enough to deserve the win. The Dutch driver is in very good form and he went on to confirm this setting the fastest race lap time.
Barwa Addax Team has increased its lead in the team championship and is on 36 puntos 14 points clear of the second placed team. Giedo van der Garde has the compensation of becoming the new leader in the driver’s championship. For tomorrow’s second race he starts from seventh on the grid, just one position from scoring more points to really round off his feats this weekend which include two points for his pole position, the fastest race lap time, and second place finish in the long race. Charles Pic has climbed to third overall in the driver’s championship and is now paying back all the faith that the team put in him.
Tomorrow’s we shall see if Barwa Addax Team is capable of scoring more points in tomorrow’s sprint race which will be raced over 26 laps covering a distance of 120.904 kms, and starts at 10,35hrs local time.
