By Eric Mauk: Two-time World Rally champ was KO'd by a light pole in practice for the X Games rally cross event
Current Global RallyCross championship points leader Marcus Gronholm was knocked unconscious after he crashed into a concrete base for a light pole during practice for today’s GRC event at the X Games.
Gronholm was transported to a nearby hospital after being found breathing but unconscious after the accident. He was awake and alert at the hospital, but the Finnish driver needed to undergo testing to determine if there were further injuries.
Gronholm came over a jump in his Ford Focus and set up for a left-hand turn when he appeared to cut the turn a little too tight. The light pole base jutted out slightly from between the barriers for the turn and Gronholm’s car hit it, bouncing back into the middle of the track.
The two-time World Rally Champion is the series points leader after victories in Dallas and Charlotte, and has a pair of X Games medals to his credit as well.
The accident was the second for a Finnish driver in this X Games, as Toomas "Topi" Heikkinen, came up short on the jump in practice on Friday, smashing the front end of his car and fracturing his left ankle.
Neither driver was able to rally in the X Games, Heikkinen needing two surgeries on his ankle after a very frightening crash. ESPN reported today that Gronholm had some bleeding on the brain, although a statement from Gronholm did not mention that particular injury.
