FORT WORTH-DALLAS (Feb. 19, 2000) - Last year Austin's Casey Smith was unbeatable during the Winter Shootout Legends auto racing series and he went on to win a national championship during the summer season. This winter, Carrollton's Jared Whitton has assumed that role.
Whitton wound up the 1999-2000 Winter Shootout season at Lil' Texas Motor Speedway with a 25-lap victory Saturday afternoon in the Semi Pro Division feature event. The triumph was Whitton's fifth win in the six Shootout races.
Rod Slack, Fort Worth, captured his third straight Pro/Masters division feature victory while James Southerland, North Richland Hills, took the Charger division checkered flag. Irving's Hinojosa family dominated the Bandolero class with son Nick claiming his first Bandolero feature victory and father Tony taking the adult Outlaw Bandolero main event.
Whitton could not shake runnerup Ronnie Hall, Alvord, during the Semi Pro race but eventually pulled away to a 2.3 second victory margin. Ryan Lawler, Colleyville, recovered from an early-race spin to place third.
Slack's victory run came in a back-to-front effort around the one-fifth mile paved oval. Slack moved around early pacesetter Steve Gottsacker, University Park, just past the halfway point of the 25-lap event and won by 1.3 seconds. Gottsacker was trailed by Steve Kidwell, Southlake.
Southerland took command of the Charger headliner after leader Rick Howle, Rowlett, spun out. Southerland had to withstand severe challenges from Pete Baynard, Southlake and James Landrum, Mesquite, before pulling away to win by a straightaway.
Nick Hinojosa bested Mark Merino, Plano and Andrew Lewis, Coppell.
