COMMODORE FASTEST IN FIRST V8 BRutes SESSION
COMPETITORS in Australia's newest motor racing series, the V8 BRutes, thrilled a record crowd when they took to the track for the very first time today in Adelaide.
The V8 BRutes feature equally-powered versions of the latest Holden Commodore SS and Ford Falcon XR8 utilities, with few modifications other than safety equipment.
Today's crowd of 43,800 spectators saw Melbourne driver Rod Wilson finish fastest in the newest version of Holden-Ford racing rivalry.
Wilson, in a Commodore, topped an unofficial qualifying session, but will start from second position after grid spots for tomorrow's first of three races were drawn. Pole position went to Falcon driver Damien White.
Wilson said the Falcons and Commodores had proved surprisingly close in performance.
"I had to work really hard to get by Damien White today. They slide around on semi-road tyres and you have to take care of the brakes. I'm also driving a Nations Cup Ferrari this weekend and, believe me, the Commodore is harder work," he said.
The V8 BRutes' Adelaide appearance will be a shakedown for a six-round championship starting at Wakefield Park, NSW, on 4-6 May. The series will be staged by PROCAR Australia. <pre> QUALIFYING RESULTS: Min., sec. STARTING ORDER (draw): 1. Rod Wilson (Holden Commodore SS) 1:48.17 2 2.
