Race One Win Continues Zukanovic's V8 Ute Domination at Symmons Plains
Ford driver Marcus Zukanovic streaked clear of chaos to an all-the-way win in race one of the Kanga Loaders V8 Ute Summer Shootout at Symmons Plains circuit in Tasmania today.
After securing pole position this morning by a margin of just one-hundredth of a second, the Victorian kept his Falcon XR8 ute at the front of the 21-car field with a strong start and was unchallenged over 12 laps.
Team Brock Holden SS drivers Benn Wilson and Damien White were hard on Zukanovic's tail on the first lap, but were eliminated from contention in a tussle over turn one at the start of lap two.
Both cars ran off the track after a heavy collision. White continued in the race and finished eighth, but Wilson retired with broken steering.
Grant Denyer, who had started fifth in a Ford, took advantage of the melee to grab second place, while former karting star Luke May (Ford) followed into third spot.
Denyer broke the ute lap record on lap 10 although his speed was not enough to catch Zukanovic, who won by more than a second.
Symmons' infamous hairpin eliminated two other Holden drivers on lap two.
After a door-to-door race down the top straight, ute stalwarts Charlie Kovacs and Rod Wilson arrived together at the hairpin and collided. Kovacs clouted the armco crash barrier; Wilson, with damaged steering, collected Martin Miller (Ford) as he careered out of the race.
After starting strongly in his return to ute racing, country singer Adam Brand retired his Falcon on lap 10 when the right-front tyre rolled off the wheel rim at the hairpin.
Several other drivers performed well. Paul Leaver recorded a ute-career best result of fifth in a Holden and Ian McAlister took his Falcon from 20th on the starting grid to 11th at the finish.
The V8 Utes will contest two more races in the Kanga Loaders V8 Ute Summer Shootout for the Dunlop Championship Trophy at the Triple Challenge V8 Supercar meeting tomorrow.
Race two will feature reversed grids for the faster and slower halves of the field, with Colin Dunn starting from pole in a Ford.
