The sun shone on television weatherman Grant Denyer when he won an exciting first leg of round eight of the Poolrite V8 Brutes Series at the Gold Coast Indy in Queensland today.

Ford Falcon XR8 from fourth grid spot, but steadily picked off his rivals over the six-lap race.

Gary Baxter sat on pole position for the start, but it was fellow South Australian and Holden SS driver Chris Smerdon who led the field into the first corner.

However, Smerdon soon slowed with an apparent mechanical problem and Baxter, Glenn Barnes (Holden) and Denyer quickly took over the first three places.

Meanwhile, series leader and defending champion Warren Luff was off the pace in ninth spot in his Falcon, watching his closest rival Gary MacDonald (Holden) move ahead into a higher-scoring position.

Luff finished an uncharacteristic 10th, although he still has a comfortable, if reduced, lead over MacDonald with two races left tomorrow and Sunday to decide the series.

Denyer, the weather presenter for Channel Seven's Sunrise breakfast program, took second place from Barnes and then first from Baxter on lap four, then continued unchallenged to the finish.

RESULTS (Race 1, Round 8)
1. Grant Denyer (NSW) Ford Falcon XR8
2. Glenn Barnes (Vic.) Holden SS
3. Damien White (NSW) Ford
4. Gary Baxter (SA) Holden
5. Gary MacDonald (NSW) Holden
6. Kim Jane (Vic.) Holden
