NEWSHAM SETS THE PACE AT SNETTERTON TEST
Team Pyro's Dave Newsham (Inverness) showed why he is among the favourites to lift the 2010 ELF Renault Clio Cup with Michelin title after setting the fastest time during official pre-season testing at Snetterton on Wednesday, 24th March. Returning for his second season of the one-make series, the 42-year-old former Legends racer posted a best time of 1min 17.826s (90.29mph average) around the 1.952-mile Norfolk circuit.
His time was also inside both the current lap record (1min 17.975s, Matt Allison) and last year's best testing time set by 2009 Vice Champion Alex MacDowall who, like many previous Clio Cup competitors, has since made the step up to BTCC and will race alongside Jason Plato this year for RML Chevrolet Cruze.
Total Control Racing's Sam Tordoff (Leeds), who finished eighth in the championship last year, also ran well throughout the day posting the second best time with a 1min 17.966s (90.13mph average).
The first of four sessions saw Newsham quickly jump to the top of the timesheets closely followed by Tordoff and newcomer Jack Goff, 19, from High Wycombe running with championship winning team Pyro.
Newsham repeated his performance in the second session before the lunch break, setting what would become the best time of the day, with Tordoff, Team Pyro racers David Dickenson (Keatingstown, Ireland) and Goff along with Westbourne Motorsport's James Colburn (Worthing) also running strongly.
The Inverness racer continued to dominate in the third session with Goff once again impressing before Tordoff eventually put a stop to Newsham's unbeaten run by going top in the final session of the day with the 20-year-old lapping in the high 1min 17s. The final session also saw improvements for Westbourne Motorsport's Rob Gaffney (Waltham Abbey) and 20Ten Racing's Darren Wilson (Newark) with Clio Cup debutant Mathew Munson, racing with Stancombe Vehicle Engineering, also gaining some valuable track time.
Commenting on his performance Newsham said: "Pyro have given me a great car which feels much sharper and I can't wait to begin racing. I've tested well all season and I'm certainly feeling confident ahead of the first rounds at Thruxton."
The opening rounds of the ELF Renault Clio Cup with Michelin season take place at Hampshire's Thruxton circuit on 3rd/4th April.
