RENAULT SPORT TEAMS WELCOME NEW THREE-YEAR DEAL
Teams competing in the Michelin Formula Renault UK Championship and the ELF Renault Clio Cup with Michelin series have welcomed Renault's announcement to renew its three-year rolling agreement to remain on the TOCA/British Touring Car Championship support race package.
Renault's motor sport championships have proudly been a part of the BTCC package since 1993 with the announcement ensuring this continues to at least the end of 2013, which will also mark Renault's 20th year running alongside the popular touring car series.
Mark Hunt, Team Manager of Clio Cup team Pyro, who runs championship leader Dave Newsham, says the move is very positive for the future of the series commenting: "The announcement demonstrates Renault's commitment to the Clio Cup and gives all the teams competing stability and security." Mark, who's Team Pyro outfit joined the series in 2005, added: "It should also encourage more drivers to compete in the championship -- which still remains the best BTCC feeder series -- and we've already had a lot of interest concerning the 2011 season."
Sentiments echoed by Manor Competition Team Manager Tony Shaw who runs two of the top three drivers in the Formula Renault UK current standings. "It's brilliant news for the championship and will undoubtedly help develop interest from those looking to race in the series next season and beyond. The BTCC is the premier motorsport package in the country with excellent television coverage and it's great that Formula Renault UK is to remain a key part of this."
Formula Renault UK is regarded by many as the country's leading single-seater championship, launching the car racing careers of Formula One stars Lewis Hamilton and Kimi Raikkonen while the Clio Cup is the UK's premier one-make saloon car championship.
