SCAMMONDEN ACE LLOYD AIMING FOR THRUXTON TOP 10 NEXT WEEKEND
Promising young saloon car racer Daniel Lloyd is aiming to continue his impressive start to the 2009 ELF Renault Clio Cup when the championship resumes at Thruxton Circuit next weekend, 25th/26th April, for the third and fourth rounds of the season.
The 17-year-old, who has just a single season of car racing experience from the Ginetta Junior Championship to call on, began his maiden year of action in the high-profile Clio Cup in great style at Brands Hatch a fortnight ago with a best result of seventh position during the second race.
Emerging from the season curtain-raiser eighth in the championship standings, Daniel was happy with his overall performance at the wheel of his Team Pyro-entered car and now heads into the second event of the season bidding for more top 10 consistency.
During official pre-event testing at Thruxton on Tuesday of this week, the Scammonden based ace was just on the fringe of the top 10 during session one with a time a fraction under a second shy of the outright pace.
Although suffering with traffic problems in the second 45-minutes of testing, which prevented him from getting the best out of his fresh tyres, Daniel still improved his pace and ended the day only 0.789 seconds away from experienced team-mate Philip Glew's timesheet-topping best at the 2.35 mile Hampshire venue.
Now, with just over a week to go until the Thruxton meeting, Daniel is looking forward to being back behind the wheel of his 120mph-plus Clio Cup racer as he bids to retain his top 10 placing in the driver standings with another sparkling performance.
"We're really looking forward to Thruxton next weekend", said Daniel, "The action in Clios is always mad but at a track like Thruxton where slip-streaming is a big part of things it's bound to be even more hectic. The season has started well, the second race at Brands Hatch was good and I was really pleased with my performance. Hopefully we can keep building on that as the season goes on.
"The Thruxton test this week didn't go quite as we had planned as we were held up in the second session quite badly by other cars and so didn't get the best out of the tyres. Even so, our pace wasn't too bad but we know there's a lot of time to be gained. We'll look at the data before qualifying next weekend to try and get the maximum out of me and the car."
Daniel's return to action at Thruxton eight days from now will begin with qualifying for the third and fourth rounds of the 2009 ELF Renault Clio Cup which takes place at 11.15 on Saturday, 25th April. Round three, which will be contested over 12 laps, will get underway at approximately 16.25 on the Saturday with round four timetabled to start at 12.55 on Sunday, 26th April.
The second of the weekend's races is scheduled to be screened live on ITV4 which can be accessed at Freeview channel 28, via cable on channel 117 and through the Sky Digital platform on channel 120.
