EVER-IMPROVING LLOYD LOOKING FORWARD TO SILVERSTONE GP SPECTACULAR
Scammonden teenager Daniel Lloyd is striving for a career best ELF Renault Clio Cup performance during the category's biggest race meeting of the year at Silverstone Grand Prix Circuit next weekend, 4th/5th July, as he bids to consolidate his place as the top rookie in the 2009 driver standings.
Off the back of some excellent recent performances, the 17-year-old Total Control Racing driver boosted his confidence even further at Snetterton Circuit in Norfolk yesterday, Wednesday, 24th June, during official testing by posting the eighth quickest time overall.
Lapping in 1m18.564 seconds (89.44mph) during the fourth of the day's quartet of sessions, Daniel was actually sixth fastest in that period and was within six 10ths of a second of the outright pace. Impressively, for much of the final run he was in the top two.
Yesterday's test marked the first opportunity Clio Cup competitors had to run with new bodywork and front suspension which has been introduced by Renault Sport to bring the race car in-line with its recently face-lifted road-going counterpart.
Progressing well throughout the morning, Daniel had an unfortunate tyre blow-out during session two as he entered the Esses at the end of the ultra-fast Revett Straight. Bouncing back strongly in the afternoon, the West Yorkshire racer was eighth quickest in session three before producing his best time of the day during the final 45-minutes.
"We're pleased with the progress we made again in the test", said Daniel, "The blow-out near the end of the morning wasn't ideal obviously but sessions three and four went really well. We were second fastest for quite a while in the last session, which is the first time we've been that high-up in a Clio test. To end up in the top eight overall though is good, thanks again to the team for doing a great job."
Now, all attention turns to the Silverstone Grand Prix Circuit meeting a week from now and with around 250,000 free tickets having been distributed so far the expected attendance is set to once again underline the World Series by Renault event's position as the second biggest car racing event in the UK, behind only the Formula One British Grand Prix.
Along with the Clio Cup, the support package of championships includes Formula Renault UK, Eurocup Megane Trophy and Eurocup Formula Renault. In addition to the competitive action, the expected huge crowds will also be treated to on-track displays including Formula One demonstrations by the ING Renault F1 Team.
Ahead of Silverstone, Daniel is also working incredibly hard to attract additional commercial partners with headline sponsorship of his car still available.
