CAREER BEST CLIO CUP QUALIFYING EFFORT FOR LLOYD AT ROCKINGHAM
West Yorkshire's Daniel Lloyd produced a career best ELF Renault Clio Cup qualifying performance at Rockingham in Northamptonshire this afternoon, Saturday, 19th September, to secure a fantastic top three start for tomorrow's 17th round of the season.
At the wheel of his Total Control Racing prepared car the 17-year-old from Scammonden produced a tremendous best lap of 1m 30.422 seconds (77.23mph) on the International Super Sports Car Circuit configuration, missing out on his first championship pole position by a mere 0.188 seconds.
Rapid throughout the 30-minute session, Daniel actually felt he should have been faster still but slight contact with the kerbs at Brook Chicane on his quickest lap lost him the vital fraction of a second he needed to line-up on the front row.
Originally, Daniel's best lap did place him fourth on the timesheets but second-placed qualifier Dave Newsham had all of his times deleted after infringing championship regulations, thus moving the TCR teenager to the head of row two.
"The weekend started well for us in testing on Friday and, realistically, I think being on the second row is where we should be here, we've been quick from the off", commented the Clio Cup rookie, "We've been improving a lot over the last few events and I'm really pleased with the performance we produced today. The car felt really good and it lasted well too so I'm looking forward to the races."
For round 18, Daniel will start from sixth on the grid after posting a second best lap of 1m 30.568 seconds -- just over a 10th of a second shy of the front row.
Round 17 of the championship will get underway at 10.00 tomorrow, Sunday, 20th September, with the 18th round of the season following at approximately 15.15. The second 14-lap encounter will be screened live on Freeview, cable and digital satellite channel ITV4 -- please check listings for details.
