DETERMINED HERRON HUNGRY FOR OULTON PARK VICTORY
Talented saloon car racer Andrew Herron is hungrier than ever to climb atop the ELF Renault Clio Cup podium and the Northern Irishman aims to do just that at the challenging Oulton Park Island Circuit in Cheshire this weekend, 30th/31st May.
Racing for the JHR Developments team and currently fourth overall in the driver standings, just 34 points shy of the championship lead and a mere seven points adrift of second place, Dromore based Andrew is as determined as ever to claim his first win of 2009 during the fourth event of the year.
After scoring more points than any other Clio Cup competitor at Donington Park eight days ago with a podium finish in round five and a fighting fourth place in the rain-affected round six, the 20-year-old was also the fastest driver of the weekend and set a new circuit lap record for the 1.95-mile track.
The Brian Herron Contracts-backed star has been in terrific form since his return to Clios at the start of the season and has consistently produced front-running pace. If he can secure a place on the front row of the grid at Oulton Park on Saturday, Andrew will undoubtedly be a favourite for victory.
Looking ahead to rounds seven and eight, he commented: "If we can leave Oulton Park with two more podiums it'll definitely be another successful weekend. I want that first win though, not winning so far this year has made me more determined to try harder and work harder. Oulton has never been my strongest track but I went well there last year in the SEAT championship so I'm looking forward to it."
So far this year, qualifying hasn't gone completely to plan for Andrew and he recognises this has played the biggest factor in keeping him off the top step of the podium during the six races which have so far taken place. At the weekend though, he's determined to achieve his first front row start of 2009.
"Realistically I'm aiming to start on the front row for both Oulton Park races", added Andrew, "Up to now we haven't managed that and that's the main reason I haven't won a race yet as we definitely had the outright pace at Thruxton and Donington. The championship is going well so far though, the guys at JHR are doing a fantastic job for me, I'm happy and they're happy too."
Pre-event practice ahead of the Oulton Park race meeting will be held on Friday, 29th May. Qualifying for rounds seven and eight is timetabled to begin at 12.00 on Saturday, 30th May, with the first race of the weekend scheduled to follow at 17.10.
Round eight is expected to get underway at 15.50 on Sunday, 31st May, and will be screened live across the UK on ITV4 on Freeview channel 28, cable channel 117 and Sky Digital channel 120.
Provisional 2009 ELF Renault Clio Cup Driver Standings (after Rd6): 1st Philip Glew, 175pts; 2nd Aron Smith, 148pts; 4th Andrew Herron, 141pts.
