HERRON AIMING TO END 2009 IN WINNING WAYS ON BRANDS GP DEBUT
Andrew Herron will experience the full length Brands Hatch Grand Prix Circuit for the first time in his career this weekend, 3rd/4th October, when the 2009 ELF Renault Clio Cup comes to a conclusion at the Kent venue.
Going into the last two races of the championship, rounds 19 and 20, the 21-year-old from Northern Ireland still has a chance to claim the Vice-Champion's spot in the driver standings. The current gap to second placed Alex MacDowall -- 30 points on overall scores but 41 points when 'drop scores' are deducted -- is a large one to bridge, but Andrew will be pushing as hard as ever.
Although his season has been compromised by misfortune on a number of occasions the Dromore based racer has still managed to remain in the battle at the head of the championship, scoring seven podiums so far and impressively finishing every race, bar one, inside the top 10.
For the Clio Cup's first race meeting at Brands Hatch Grand Prix Circuit since 2005, Andrew will potentially face his toughest challenge of the season at a track he has never previously experienced at the wheel of a racing car.
"I'm really looking forward to the weekend, we did a track day on the GP circuit last week and, from what I've seen, I think it's probably the best circuit in the UK" commented Andrew, "Without any experience of the track in the race car it'll be tough but I'm pretty confident testing should go well and then it'll be a case of qualifying as strongly as we can.
"Unfortunately we've made the races harder for ourselves this season with qualifying never quite going to plan so hopefully we can buck that trend for the final two rounds and start at the front of the grid. We managed to secure third in the championship at Rockingham so I'm going all out to try and score as many points as possible to pressurise (Alex) MacDowall for the Vice-Champion's position."
On Friday, 2nd October, pre-event practice will be held at Brands Hatch Grand Prix Circuit with qualifying taking place on Saturday, 3rd October, at 11.15 and round 19 following at approximately 16.20. Round 20 is currently timetabled to begin at 15.05 on Sunday, 4th October, and is set to be screened live on Freeview, cable and digital satellite channel ITV4.
