Cytech UAE Touring Car Championship drivers and teams fired up for Yas Marina weekend

The Cytech UAE Touring Car Championship visits the iconic Yas Marina Circuit in Abu Dhabi on 16 and 17 April 2010 and the excitement among drivers and teams is palpable. The local contingent will be part of the support bill for this weekend's inaugural FIA GT1 World Championship race weekend at Yas Marina Circuit.

For the local drivers and teams, being part of the opening round of the SRO organised international sport cars, this will be their first opportunity to showcase top level UAE touring cars on an international stage. And they are likely to impress as racing in the Cytech UAE Touring Car Championship has been of the highest order this season.

Emirati driver Khalid Al Mutawaa, who is a leading championship contender for the Class 1 in Cytech UAE Touring Car title, said ahead of the weekend in Abu Dhabi, "I am really looking forward to this race. Having two race tracks in the UAE is special and Yas Marina being a Grand Prix circuit is amazing. To support an international series such as the inaugural FIA GT1 series is an honour. I am proud to be an Emirati driver in this era and intend to bring back silverware, for my House of Portier and TAM Auto Engineering team, from our first race in Abu Dhabi."

This sentiment prevails with all the drivers who will perform at Yas Marina this weekend. The will to win for the first time at Yas Marina will bring out the best from, what is expected to be, one of the biggest field of Cytech UAE Touring cars to line up on a grid this season.

In Class 1 Khalid Al Mutawaa driving the House of Portier SEAT leads the standings tied with Jon Simmonds in the DXB Racing SEAT. The matter of the title is up for grabs between these two and a strong showing at Yas Marina, by either, is vital for their championship aspirations.

Reigning UAE Touring Car Champion Mohammed Al Owais, who has been campaigning the Chev Supercars this season, makes a welcome return behind the wheel of Khaled Bin Hadher's SEAT which has already been driven to victory this year. Al Owais, who races under the lap 57 banner, will be looking to be the spanner in the works of the Class 1 brigade. This trio can be expected to feature at the sharp end of proceedings and deliver fireworks while battling it out for every piece of tarmac at Yas Marina.

Other drivers to watch in Class 1 include late addition to the battleground Nader Zuhour (SEAT) who impresses with every outing, Phil McGovern (VW GTi) and Mohammed El Arishy (BMW) who features prominently in the BMW international race ranking.

Class 2 of the Cytech UAE Touring Car Championship has provided the closest and fiercest racing seen all season long. The UAE team, Lap 57 Honda, has set the pace with Umair Khan and Omran Al Owais leading the championship standings. The two slug it among themselves for top honours, while keeping at bay a pack of very determined drivers eager to knock them off the top step of the podium. These include the likes of Honda privateer Aslam Moola who has tasted victory this season, a2b Honda trio of Jason O'Keefe, Phill Anson and Spencer Vanderpal, Mohammed Al Mutawa (House of Portier Renault) and Performance Racing's Zlatko Mulabegovic.

Class 3, of the series, is a "battle within a battle" as a dozen Suzuki Swifts will "trade paint" in their very own Swift Cup Series. Drivers compete on equal terms and in equal cars. Four and five cars racing side by side is part and parcel of this pocket rocket series and should again provide a great show.

In fact side by side racing is synonymous with the Cytech UAE Touring Car series. Bumper to bumper, paint scraping and side-mirror destruction is the order of the day. Racing does not get closer than that on offer by the local touring car brigade and this weekend, as they go all out to impress, at the seven star Yas Marina venue victory will be sweeter than ever.

With the two class championships and the overall 2009/2010 Cytech UAE Touring Car Championship title very much up for grabs with one round after Yas Marina left to go, the "Beware of Fireworks" signs will be up all weekend long at Yas Marina.
