It was a fairly light weekend across the motorsport spectrum this weekend, but there were no shortage of heroic performances and Oh-my-God-did-they-really-just-do-that moments that we at Motorsport.com like to call Trophies and Trailers.
Trophies to Travis Pastrana who finally got away from the bad luck that had vexed him at each of the three previous rounds of the Global Rallycross Challenge. Pastrana showed why he is considered a top-notch rally driver by making two tight passes for the lead – one in his heat and another in the final – to win the GRC event at Loudon.
Trailers to Kevin Harvick for another classless display at the end of the NASCAR Nationwide event at Loudon. He felt he got held up by Amber Cope while trying to pass Brad Keselowski for the lead, so he waited on-track during the cool-down lap and cut her off with his car as she tried to enter pit lane.
Trophies to the SRT Motorsports team not only for reintroducing the Viper to the American Le Mans Series, but also for bringing Tommy Kendall back into the fray. They will be up against stiff competition in the GT field but the class just got a lot more interesting.
Trophies to Michael Lewis for being the highest-placing American at Sunday’s Masters of F3 event at Zandvoort. He doesn’t get the media attention of a Conor Daly but the youngster is quietly moving up the European open-wheel ladder.
Trailers to Brad Keselowski for coming out publicly and saying that, no matter whether A.J. Allmendinger’s ‘B’ sample is negative or not, the driver’s first positive test was a ‘death sentence’ for his career. First of all, the two are teammates, second of all, in a sport where serious injury or death is always lurking around the next turn, Keselowski made a poor choice of words.
Trailers to Darien Grubb, crew chief for Denny Hamlin’s NASCAR Spring Cup team for taking four tires on the last stop at Loudon and giving away a win to Kasey Kahne. Grubb had planned on two tires but changed his mind at the last minute. The four-tire stop helped the car, but dropped Hamlin to 14th on the restart. Hamlin made his way back to second at the finish.
Trophies to Mattias Ekstrom for living up to his ‘Stadium King’ nickname in winning the DTM individual competition this weekend in Munich’s Olympic Stadium. Ekstrom earned his moniker by winning the highly-competitive Race of Champions three times before yesterday’s stadium win.
