Free Practice - Round Four - Ruapuna - October 17-19

Shooting for a double, but tough away from home

This weekend it is the New Zealanders who are playing host for round four of the Trans Tasman Challenge which is taking place at Ruapuna International Raceway, only 10 minutes from Christchurch International Airport and 20 minutes from the centre of the city.

With the series leaders Darren Hossack and Tony Ricciardello electing not to make the trek across the Tasman sea, recently crowned Australian Sports Sedan Champion Kerry Baily stands a good chance of claiming two 2003 titles.

But the Kiwis are eager to readdress that bid as Kane Scott heads the Friday practice sheets. His 1 min 21.1 easily headed the fourth round field. In fact he had a 1.7 second advantage over fellow countrymen Craig Gilbert and Bernie Gillon in their respective Corvettes and Mustang.

Victorian Dean Randle headed the Aussie challenge on unfamiliar turf although the three visitors utilised old rubber as they acquainted themselves with the unfamiliar twists and turns of the South Island circuit.

Randle is setting up for Saturday’s qualifier while fellow Aussie Baily feels that that is much more to come from the Championship winning Nissan. Meanwhile Rodney Woods chased suspension and ultimate drive perfection with several spring and gear ratio changes.
