New Zealanders show the way with top three spots

It was a great day for the locals in round four of the Trans Tasman Challenge where New Zealand Tranzam cars are matched up against Australian Sports Sedans. The Kiwis took the top three grid positions.

The Chev Corvettes of Kayne Scott and Shane Drake will share the front row after heading the qualifying time sheets. Craig Gilbert in his Chev Camaro was over a second slower but well clear of the best of the Aussies, Dean Randle in his Chev-powered Saab Aero.

Randle was almost two seconds adrift of the locals but anticipates that race conditions will bring him back to the front-runners. “I really am looking forward to the rolling start, its something we don’t have in our category in Australia,” he said.

After three rounds in Australia, Bernie Gillon is the best-placed regular of the New Zealanders in the series and consistency will be a major factor in his stake for supremacy. Gillon qualified sixth ahead of Australian (sharing equal third) Kerry Baily.

Baily who recently secured his fifth Australian Sports Sedan Championship felt he had no speed gain with his switch to new tyres for qualifying, nor did the Nissan 300ZX/Chev have the optimum corner speed. Typically brakes played a crucial part of his preparations and again problems in this arrear affected his performance.

Behind the fourth row pairing of Dennis Running and Steve Ross in their respective Camaro and Oldsmobile was the third of the trans Tasman Australian invaders Rod Woods in his Chev-powered Holden Commodore.

Woods experienced clutch problems early on before flat-spotting one of his new tyres. He was pleased to be in the top ten and is expecting to have superior race pace and take the challenge up to those ahead. Local Eddie Fairbairn completes the fast set in tenth in his Chev Camaro.
