TOYOTA SOUTH AFRICA WITHDRAWS SUPER TOURERS

Toyota South Africa has decided to withdraw from Class A of Super Touring racing with immediate effect - this also meaning the company will not take part in the two-round International Series in November and December.

The company cited expense as the major reason for its withdrawal mainly because it does not have a source company involved in a similar project elsewhere in the world.

Says Dr Johan van Zyl, managing director: vehicle marketing: "We had high hopes of developing the Super Touring Camry in a joint venture with Toyota Motor Sales in the USA, but their main sport priority currently is the Indycar programme with Dan Gurney. We are negotiating with them to possibly swop the two Camry rolling chassis for a Hilux stadium racer and the Americans will then use our cars as a base for their apparently low-key 1997 Super Touring programme."

Toyota SA will, however, campaign a number of Corollas in Class B of Super Touring and in Group N racing besides participating in rallying, off-road racing and short course racing.
