Biagi, Cerqui and Gabellini are the Superstars Series 2011 drivers for BMW Team Italy
BMW Team Italy decided the name of the drivers that will take part in the Superstars Series 2011 at the wheel of three works M3 BMWs: Thomas Biagi and Stefano Gabellini are confirmed and, according to the new policy posing the attention on young and emerging drivers, the eighteen-years-old Alberto Cerqui will be the youngest driver ever in the history of the team.
Biagi, 34 years, obtained in 2010 with the team the Italian and International titles thanks to eight podiums, two victories and three pole positions. Two FIA GT1 titles obtained in 2003 and 2007 as well as several experiences as Formula 1 tester shine in his cv.
Cerqui, 18 years, is considered as one of the most promising young Italian drivers. He raced in karting at International levels and won the Italian Formula Azzurra Championship in 2009 , before moving to the Italian Formula 3 in 2010.
Gabellini, 45 years, has a considerable career in touring cars racing. Among his main accomplishments are the victory in the ETCS Championship in 2005 and the International Superstars title in 2008, at the wheel of BMW cars.
Roberto Ravaglia (BMW Team Italy, Team Principal):
"We decided to line up three cars instead of the four of last year to optimize the resources and the technical solutions. The confirmation of Biagi and Gabellini allows us to guarantee a consistent stability within the team, while the insertion of a young talent like Cerqui, who will have the chance to grow up gradually with the team, is an important novelty both for us and for the championship".
"Racing with BMW Team Italy in 2010 was a dream come true for me and continuing this in 2011 too is great. The feeling with the team, the best I have raced for in my career, is perfect and this is an advantage with respect to last year when we started from scratch".
"Racing with an works team is the ambition of every driver and getting there at eighteen years of age is something incredible. It won't be easy for me, especially at the beginning: coming from single seaters, I never raced on a touring car before and therefore I will unavoidably need to adapt my racing style as well as to learn some tracks that are going to be new for me. I will have anyway the luck of being able to count on the experience of Roberto Ravaglia and Umberto Grano from whom I could certainly learn a lot and I will do the same with two top class drivers as Biagi and Gabellini".
"I am really satisfied by this confirmation, that in some ways is even more important than the initial agreement with the team in 2010: even if my championship last year lived some episodes not always fortunate, BMW bosses decided to bet on me again; this decision excites me and I hope a season full of satisfaction for the whole team will follow".
