SANDOWN Melbourne, Australia Sept 12...A mixed day for young Victorian Sports Sedan star, Stephen Vines just failing to break into the top ten despite setting his best ever Sandown lap at a hotly contested final round of the Australian Sports Sedan Championship at Melbourne's Sandown Raceway.

After setting his fastest ever time around his home circuit, Vines just failed to drop back into the 14's to finish the first Qualifying session in 11th place with a 1:15.3980. The Pirotta Racing, Gypsum Australia Cortina V8 benefited from some fresh rubber in Friday morning's first Practice session leaving Vines confident of a top ten in the afternoon.

Vines will face tough competitiion over the weekend, not only from Australia's fastest Sports Sedans but a trio of the spectacular Trans-Am machines from New Zealand.

Western Australian star Tony Ricciardello in his Chev powered Alfetta GTV sits on pole with a spectacular 1:08.9444 ahaed of local driver Darren Hossack in the Chev/SAAB.

New Zealand's Kayne Scott in the Trans-Am Corvette that he took to a sixth place at Sears Point earlier this year was the fastest of the Kiwis with a 1:09.6147.

The Pirotta team will work hard into the night to try and find that extra second before Saturday's second qualifying and the first race.
