Rick Pearson to return to Clio Trophy at Spa

British Renault Clio ace Rick Pearson will return to the European V6 series at Spa this coming weekend after missing the last three rounds following the departure of his main sponsor.

Pearson's last outing in the Clio Trophy was at Monaco two months ago. Despite a trouble free run to a fantastic ninth place overall on his first visit to the principality -- the only Briton to do so since team boss Mark Fish in the late eighties- his championship campaign looked to have met a premature end when he was unable to register for rounds three, four and five held at Jarama, Anderstorp and Oschersleben respectively.

Although he has yet to find a suitable sponsor, Pearson has decided to make a one-off return to the series to race in the Spa 24 Hours support race with his regular team, Mark Fish Motorsport.

"I'm keen to get an FIA GT or ETCC drive next year so driving in the Clio Trophy race at Spa, albeit on a limited budget, seems to be the ideal opportunity to impress. I've spent two seasons learning the European circuits and making a name for myself in tough conditions so I hope that I can capitalise on the breakthrough I made in Monaco and really show what I can do."

Despite his enforced lay-off, Pearson is no stranger to Spa-Francorchamps. The Fulham resident finished fifteenth there last year, making up twenty-four places on his grid slot after a huge130 mph accident at Blanchimont in qualifying.

"Spa is a fantastic circuit and a real pleasure to drive," he says. "It's extremely challenging because you never quite know what the elements are about to throw at you but the scenery is breathtaking and you get a real sense of achievement when you hook the perfect lap up in qualifying simply because it's such a difficult track to get right."

The Spa-Francorchamps round of the Renault Sport Clio Trophy takes places August 2nd and 3rd.
