Smokin'Buckeye ready to race following test session at Columbus Motor Speedway
Columbus, Ohio The Ohio State University Formula Lightning electric race car completed a successful one day test session on Sunday May 11, at Columbus Motor Speedway. The Smokin' Buckeye ran more than 110 laps during the test on the one-third mile oval. The test improved an oval track set-up for next weekend's event at Southern National Speedway, in Kenly, North Carolina.
Although lap times were down from a year ago, driver Craig Taylor, of Plano, Texas was pleased with the results. Throughout the day, the team increased its knowledge of oval track settings by learning how the car reacted to different adjustments. Great strides were also made with the new cooling system designed by team member Tom Sopko. The team was very pleased with the flawless performance of the motor that was recently serviced by Shoemaker Electric. Taylor summed up what testing is like, "Testing is hours of boredom, interspersed with moments of sheer terror. Taylor survived one of those moments with a near spin in turn three. He quickly corrected and continued without incident.
The team remains optimistic about its chances next weekend. The main goal of the weekend will be to increase the points lead in the ABB University Spec Series Championship. Craig Taylor, and team leader, Scott Funke, expect the greatest challenge to come from IUPUI and the University of Oklahoma. Notre Dame and Bowling Green could also present a challenge for the OSU entry. Notre Dame is making a return to the series following a one year absence.
