Smokin' Buckeye extends its winning streak with victory at the Indy Electric Classic
Columbus, Ohio - The Ohio State University electric race car team won its third consecutive race on August 13 at the .686 mile Indianapolis Raceway Park oval. Ohio State driver, Craig Taylor, of Plano, Texas, won the race which was televised live nationally on ESPN 2 in dominating fashion over the Bowling Green State University entry of Larry Crosser. The win put Ohio State into an early advantage in the series points standings.
Taylor moved into the lead on the first of twelve laps from the pole position, holding off a challenge from Chris Shultz in the IUPUI car. That challenge ended when Shultz's race came to an abrupt end against the turn two wall. Shultz was uninjured, but the car sustained heavy damage. Following a brief red flag period for the accident clean up, Taylor proceeded on without challenge from any of the other eight universities represented to win by nearly half a lap.
Overall, Taylor was pleased with the race, "The development in the last two years by the team and Shoemaker Electric is evident in the speed from qualifying. We managed to qualify nearly a full second faster than what we did here last time. The race itself was disappointing in a way because Chris (Shultz) crashed out. That kind of took the edge off, but a win is still very satisfying. All of the team members deserve congratulations for preparing a great car."
Team leader Scott Funke commented, "The car was so much better than it was the last time that we were here in 1995. The motor was more efficient and the car performed as good as it ever has. The work that we did during testing at Columbus Motor Speedway two weeks ago really paid off."
