Pearson signs with Sesterheim Motorsport for European Clio CUp, looking for points in Barcelona.
Former UK Clio Cup front-runner, Rick Pearson has signed with crack German team, Sesterheim Motorsport for an assault on the 2003 European Clio Cup after narrowly missing out on a FIA GT drive.
Although more used to campaigning a 3.0 litre Clio V6 Trophy car, Pearson was quickly on the pace at Valencia on Monday, posting the fastest time of the day ahead of several pre-season favourites.
Following the test Pearson said "I revelled in being back in Renault's 2.0 litre 'pocket-rocket'. Although I hadn't sat in the car for over two years, I was on the pace within five laps and harrying Seat's ETCC contender through the twisty sections of the circuit. The team are expecting a strong showing in the first race at Barcelona on the basis of today's performance and I believe we could be in with a serious shot at the title if we can manage to run the full season.
"I was disappointed to miss out on the Ferrari GT drive, but a good season in the European Clio Cup could be a springboard into the GTs, ETCC or perhaps even the rumoured 2004 Megane Trophy. The key thing is to continue running quickly and get as much experience as possible on the European circuits."
Pearson last raced a 2-litre Clio in the 2000 Renaultsport UK Cup, finishing fifth overall with one race win and two pole positions. He and team mate, driver champion, Jim Edwards Jnr, also helped Mark Fish Motorsport to take the team championship in the category.
Pearson is already a regular on the European circuit, having spent the last two seasons racing in the Clio V6 Trophy. Despite only managing a limited programme of events, he finished ninth at last year's Monaco Grand Prix support race, 15th at Spa-Francorchamps and 16th on home soil at Silverstone.
Following Monday's promising testing performance, DIRT mountain bikes will sponsor Pearson's 2003 season, joining long-term supporter MINTEX.
The 2003 Clio Cup will again form part of the Eurosport Super Racing Weekend package, with race summaries to be broadcast in the prime-time Super Racing Weekend magazine show.
The 2003 championship gets underway at Barcelona on April 6.
