INDIANAPOLIS, Thursday, Sept. 24, 2003 - There will be split focus for many fans during the Porsche Michelin Supercup races Sept. 27-28 at the United States Grand Prix: the close championship chase and the performance of American guest drivers Travis Pastr ana, Antonio Sabato Jr. and Kim Wolfkill.
The season finale for the world's fastest single-marque international sports car series will take place with two 16-lap races on the 2.605-mile road circuit at Indianapolis. The first race starts at 3 p.m. (EST, Indy time) Saturday, Sept. 27, with the seco nd race at 10:40 a.m. Sunday, Sept. 28.
Three drivers are still in the hunt for the season championship at Indianapolis, series leader Wolf Henzler of Germany with 166 points and Germans Pierre Kaffer and Frank Stippler, tied for second with 152 points. There are 40 points available, as 20 point s are awarded to the winner of each race. Stippler leads the series with four victories this season.
Henzler was awarded the victory at the last event in the series during the Italian Grand Prix on Sept. 14 at Monza despite finishing second in the Aqua Nova Racing Team Kadach Porsche 911 GT3 Cup. Four-time series champion Patrick Huisman of the Netherland s was forced to relinquish the victory after his DeWalt Racing/PRZO-JAM car failed post-race technical inspection due to illegal engine modifications.
While Henzler, Kaffer and Stippler will race for the title, Pastrana, Sabato and Wolfkill hope to put on a good show for the fans with their varying levels of experience in sports car racing. This will be the first car race for motocross superstar Pastran a, one of the top riders in the world in Supercross, outdoor motocross and extreme motocross. Pastrana, 18, from Annapolis, Md., will drive the No. 1 Porsche AG factory guest car. Pastrana's teammate will be Road & Track journalist Wolfkill, from Newport Beach, Calif. Wolfkill has extensive sports car experience, with starts in the Rolex 24 at Daytona, the American Le Mans Series, Speedvision World Challenge and Grand Am Cup. He races often during the summer, turning his experience into features for the m agazine.
Actor Sabato will compete in the Porsche Michelin Supercup series races for the second consecutive year. He raced for the factory Porsche AG team as a guest driver last year but will be Henzler's teammate in the No. 4 Aqua Nova Racing Team Kadach entry thi s year.
Other notable competitors in the Porsche Michelin Supercup races at Indianapolis include veteran Ellen Lohr, who joins an elite list of women to race at the Speedway.
