Edwards was a passenger in the car that crashed heavily into a tire barrier and burst into flames.

British racing driver Sean Edwards has died after a massive accident at the Queensland Raceway in Willowbank, Australia.

According to reports, the 26-year-old Edwards was riding as a passenger coaching a younger driver when the car left the track, slammed into tires protecting a wall and burst into flames.

According to Brisbane Times, the raceway’s website stated the track was being used by a company that offers 'hot laps' in a Porsche.

This year, Edwards drove for Team Allyouneed by Project 1 in the Porsche Mobil 1 Supercup season and selected starts in the American Le Mans Series with MOMO NGT Motorsport.

The driver, who has not been identified, is in serious condition after being trapped in the car for approximately two hours while rescuers worked to get him out.

In a twist of fate, Sean Edwards' father, Guy Edwards, was one of the drivers who pulled Austrian racer Niki Lauda from his fiery wreckage at the Nürburgring in 1976.

The Motorsport.com team would like to express its condolences to Sean's family and friends in this sad time.

More information as it becomes available.
