Ricciardello quicker and on pole
With a win in the first of two races, young West Australian has secured enough points to take out the 2001 Australian Sports Sedan Championship. But the celebrations are on hold until he completes the second race tomorrow and is recognised officially as the 2001 Champion.

In an attrition-filled event, the Saab/Chev of Darren Hossack beat Ricciardello off the start. However within half a lap the Ricciardello Alfa/Chev had stormed to the front while Kerry Baily was a close third clear of the fast-starting Mick Monterosso (Ford Escort/Chev) and Daniel Jameson (Jaguar/Chev).

While a high attrition rate seen many fall by the wayside, it was a tight contest for the lead. A safety car only interrupted it when one of the midfielders was stranded in a dangerous position.

With the resumption of race pace, Baily shot past Hossack and looked for a way around the leader. An opening was not forthcoming and Ricciardello went on to a narrow win.

Hossack ran into mechanical strife late in race and was forced out, leaving fellow Saab/Chev driver Dean Randle in third (and a good shot at third overall) as Jameson went out with engine problems as Monterosso finished fourth ahead of fast-finishing Luke Youlden in a Mazda RX7.

Steady performances by Phil Crompton's Ford Falcon and the Mazdas of Terry Shiel and Llynden Riethmuller seen them home in sixth, seventh and eighth while the Jaguar XJS of Michael Roddy and Bruce Deboo's Mazda completed the top ten.

Points after Race One: Tony Ricciardello 176, Kerry Baily 142, Tony Wilson 107, Ivan Mikac 104, Dean Randle 102, Stephen Voight 94, Mark Stinson 86.
